As an introductory course for all first-year students entering the College of Environmental Studies, the following three objectives are set:
1) To understand environmental studies from a liberal arts perspective, grasping the viewpoints, perspectives, and roles of each academic discipline, their interrelationships, and their connection to the real world.
2) Through interactions with the diverse faculty of the College and practitioners in the field, share the principles of “environmental justice,” broaden one's horizons, discover interests and passions, and take the first step in their studies.
3) Through repeated group work and discussions, cultivate the foundation for "dialogue" and "collaboration" toward building a sustainable society by expressing one's own thoughts, listening to others' opinions, and experiencing the process of reconciling differing viewpoints.
"Principles of Environmental Studies as Liberal Arts 1 & 2" is a series of compulsory first-year courses spanning a full academic year. Both students and faculty explore their roles in solving environmental problems and realizing a sustainable society. A faculty coordinator organizes and explains the relationships between each lecture from a liberal arts perspective, while faculty members from diverse disciplines introduce their respective academic approaches. Additionally, In several sessions, a guest speaker and multiple faculty members engage in dialogue from diverse perspectives, drawing on real-world situations related to environmental issues and sustainable community development. Students are expected to understand the role each specialized academic field plays within environmental studies as liberal arts. While developing critical thinking skills, they are encouraged to discover their own interests and consider their role as citizens participating in building a sustainable society.

環境学部に入学した初年次生全員がともに学ぶ導入科目として、以下３点を目標とする。
１）環境学をリベラルアーツの視点からとらえ、それぞれの学問分野の視点・視座・役割、それらの関連、現実社会との関係を理解する。
２）環境学部の多様な教員陣や現場の実践者との出会いを通じ、「環境正義」の理念を共有しながら、自身の視野を広げ、興味関心を発見し、環境学部での学びの一歩を踏み出す。
３）グループワーク・ディスカッションを重ねるなかで、自身の考えを表現し、他者の意見を聴き、考えをすりあわせる体験を通じて、持続可能な社会づくりに向けた「対話」「協働」の土台を育む。

リベラルアーツとしての環境学原論１は、続く２とともに、環境学の多様なアプローチとその関係性を春学期・秋学期の１年を通して学びながら、教員と学生のそれぞれが環境問題の解決と持続可能な社会の実現に向けてどのような役割を担うのかをともに考える、初年次生向けの必修科目である。本講義では、コーディネーター役の教員が、リベラルアーツの視野から見た各講義の関係性を整理、解説しつつ、多様な専門分野を持つ教員がそれぞれの学問的アプローチを紹介する。また、学外から招くゲストスピーカーや複数名の教員が同時に出講し、環境課題や持続可能な地域づくりに関する現場の状況を踏まえ、多様な学問的視点からの対話を展開する授業回も用意する。全体コーディネーター教員のもと、各教員とゲストスピーカーによる一連の講義を通して、学生は、リベラルアーツとしての環境学の中でそれぞれの専門的な学問分野がどのような役割を果たすかを理解し、批判的思考を身に付けながら、学生自身の興味関心を自ら発見し、持続可能な社会づくりに参画する一市民としての自身のあり方を考えることが期待される。
