【Course Objectives】

This course emphasizes the importance of examining environmental phenomena from both chemical and biological perspectives. Rather than considering a single phenomenon separately through the lenses of chemistry and biology, students will experience—through lectures and laboratory exercises—how these perspectives are integratively interconnected. Through several hands-on sessions, the course aims to enable students to think about environmental phenomena from both theoretical and practical viewpoints and to develop the ability to relate theory to practice.

【Course Contents】

This course provides fundamental knowledge of the Earth's environment and the natural science foundations necessary for understanding contemporary environmental issues. Introduction to Environmental Science 1 focuses in particular on chemistry and biology. In this course, students study the structure and functions of the Earth’s major environmental systems—the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere—from both chemical and biological perspectives, and explore how these systems interact with one another.

The course also addresses global environmental issues such as climate change, deforestation, air pollution, water pollution, and biodiversity loss, analyzing their causes and impacts from chemical and biological viewpoints. In addition, through basic laboratory exercises in chemistry and biology, students learn about both the connections and differences between theory and practice. Lectures and laboratory sessions in chemistry and biology are offered in an omnibus format and are taught by multiple instructors.

The content listed in the "Course Schedule" section is provided as an example, and that the order of topics and the instructors responsible for each class session from the second session onward may vary depending on the class.

In addition to standard lecture classrooms, laboratory facilities will also be used. Details regarding the content and classroom location for each class session will be explained in the first class meeting, and relevant materials will be provided via the Canvas LMS.
