Through learning and discussing one's own citizenship as an individual citizen responsible for building a sustainable society, and environmental education/ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) that supports the exercise of such citizenship, students will develop the ability to express their own thoughts on these matters.
This course aims to explore approaches to education and learning that support people and society to transform toward solving environmental problems and realizing a sustainable society. It also seeks to cultivate citizenship as a capacity for individuals to actively participate in building a sustainable society. We will review the development of environmental education and ESD to date, examining the evolution of concepts, examples of practice, and approaches, while considering their significance and challenges. Furthermore, it focuses on citizenship as a key competency fostered by environmental education and ESD, aiming for students to develop their own citizenship.
The course cultivates fundamental perspectives on environmental education and ESD that support all initiatives addressing environmental challenges, as well as the foundational citizenship necessary for taking action.

持続可能な社会づくりを担う一人の市民としての自らのシティズンシップと、そうしたシティズンシップの発揮を支える環境教育・ESD（持続可能な開発のための教育／Education for Sustainable Development）について学び議論するなかで、それらに関する自分なりの考えを表現できるようになる。

環境問題の解決や持続可能な社会の実現に向け、人間や社会が変容・変革していくための「教育・学習」のあり方について学ぶとともに、自身が持続可能な社会づくりに参画していく力としてのシティズンシップを育むことを目的とする。これまでの環境教育・ESDの発展をふりかえり、概念の変遷や、実践の具体的事例、アプローチを学び、意義、課題を検討する。また、環境教育・ESDが育む重要な力としてシティズンシップに着目し、自らが学習者としてその力を得ることを目指す。環境課題に関わるあらゆる取組を支える環境教育・ESDについての基本的な視点と、行動するための基盤となるシティズンシップを培う科目である。
This course aims to explore approaches to education and learning that support people and society to transform toward solving environmental problems and realizing a sustainable society. It also seeks to cultivate citizenship as a capacity for individuals to actively participate in building a sustainable society. We will review the development of environmental education and ESD to date, examining the evolution of concepts, examples of practice, and approaches, while considering their significance and challenges.
