Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the current state of environmental issues in Japan and the world using relevant terminology.
2) Understand the roles of diverse stakeholders, including youth, in international conferences and negotiations, as well as the synergies and trade-offs of the SDGs.
3) Analyze the impacts of environmental change on socially vulnerable populations through case studies, such as the Pacific Island countries, and propose and communicate possible actions from the perspectives of citizens and youth.
This course provides an overview of global environmental issues and international responses, followed by an exploration of specific cases in Japan.
In the first half, the instructor will share the latest trends from international conferences, such as the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UNFCCC and the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). Based on these insights, the course will cover cross-cutting themes, including climate justice, gender, and climate-induced mobility in the Pacific Island Countries.
In the second half, students will apply these international perspectives to reconsider Japan’s environmental history and current challenges, including "Kogai" (pollution) cases such as Minamata Disease, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, and Japan's national efforts toward the SDGs. The course will also discuss the SDGs synergies and trade-offs, as well as the participation of civil society and youth.
Underlining the importance of interactivity, this course fosters students' ability to communicate and engage in dialogue in English through group discussions and presentations.

Each class session requires about two hours of preparation and two hours of review.
