This course as a standard class to teach social research methods applies students' knowledge of uni-variate statistical techniques to describe the distribution of variables and bivariate statistical techniques in order to analyze the association among variables. Using a standard statistical program, students will learn to select appropriate procedures, interpret statistical output, and communicate quantitative findings, hypothesis testing and statistical inference.
Students are required to familiarize themselves with the use of Excel to learn these statistical procedures in analyses of sociological data set: statistical graph, frequency table, central tendency (mean, median), dispersion (variance, standard deviation), correlation coefficient, frequency table, cross tabulation, random sampling and random assignment, statistical estimation and statistical test, basic of time-series analysis, simple regression analysis, content analysis, basic of text mining, causality and correlation, and so on. In addition, students are instructed to write a paper to demonstrate their ability to interpret statistical output, and communicate quantitative findings, hypothesis testing and statistical inference.

この授業はPC実習を含め積み上げ型で進むので，授業計画通りに履修しないと遅れを取り戻すのが難しくなる。やむを得ず参加できない授業が生じた場合には，必ずその回の配付資料等を熟読し，実習した上で次回に臨むこと。

社会調査にかかわる資料とデータを読み解くための，基本的な分析法を学ぶ。とりわけ１変数の分布の記述と２変数間の関連の分析に習熟し，分析結果を的確に整理できるようにする。

統計グラフ，代表値（平均値，中央値），散布度（分散，標準偏差），相関係数，度数分布表，クロス集計，無作為抽出と無作為割当，統計的推定と統計的検定，時系列分析の基本，単回帰分析，内容分析，テキストマイニングの基本，因果関係と相関関係，などについて理解し，Excelを用いて実際にデータを分析してみる。
