・Learn how to read classical texts (“by researching the meaning of concepts and historical context while reading”).
・Cultivate an attitude of not being surprised or intimidated by “difficult books.”
・Acquire the ability to think about “society” through texts (sociological thinking) by researching, imagining, and reflecting on the historical context in which books were written.
In this seminar, we will read Émile Durkheim's The Suicide, a classic work of sociology. The first edition was published approximately 130 years ago in 1897, during an era when the discipline of “sociology” was still new (in its infancy). We will examine how Durkheim selected his subject matter and structured his writing to demonstrate the validity of this new field of study—sociology—to the world. Through this classic work, we will learn about the establishment of sociology as a discipline and its methodology.
We will divide into several groups and proceed with the reading gradually through a round-robin reading format.

このゼミでは社会学の古典であるE.デュルケームの『自殺論』を読みます。初版は約130年前の1897年、「社会学」という学問が「新しかった」（生まれてすぐの）時代に書かれました。皆さんが学んでいる「社会学」という学問が新しかった時代、その有効性を世に問うために、どういう対象を選び、どのような書き方をしたのか。古典を通して社会学という学問の成立とその思考法について、学びます。
いくつかのグループに分けて、輪読しながら少しずつ読み進めていきます。
