Notes

【Course Objectives】

The purpose of this course is to enable students to read and understand specialized books and articles in English while mastering the basic concepts and theories of sociology. Students will read literature that examines the relationship between the university, which is familiar to students, and the knowledge-oriented society in which we live today.

【Course Contents】

The university—based on research and education —is modeled on the one established in Germany in the 19th century. The university existed before that time, but the nature of the organization differed from that of today. Universities now exist in countries throughout the world; they create and consolidate knowledge beyond national borders. We would like to learn how such changes in the organizational nature can be explained sociologically, and we aim to acquire sociological thinking through exposure to the works of well-established sociologists.

Students are expected to divide the reading area among themselves, summarize the contents of the assigned literature (Japanese abstract) in their resumes, and present their questions and comments on the contents of the literature. They are expected to read through the literature in advance, even if they are not in charge of the presentation. Therefore, students are advised to read through the literature before class so that they can participate in class discussions. Any terms or concepts that are unfamiliar should be researched beforehand, as students must be prepared to ask questions in class.

【履修にあたって求められる能力 / Abilities Required to Take the Course】

A basic knowledge of sociology would be advantageous since the content is specialized. However, because the subject matter will be explained in class, uncertainty regarding one’s sociological knowledge does not pose a problem. The will to read the book independently is an important prerequisite.

【学生が準備すべき機器等 / Equipment, etc., that Students Should Prepare】

Literature and materials will be distributed using the Canvas LMS. As a rule, paper materials will not be distributed. Students should bring their own PCs to class.
