【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to understand the fundamental theories and perspectives within the sociology of deviance, primarily concerning crime and delinquency, enabling students to perceive these not as phenomena attributable to individual qualities or personality, but as socially constructed. To achieve this, students will: ① Be able to explain that deviance is not inherent in the act itself, but is defined by social rules, institutions, and interactions; ② Understand the mechanisms by which institutions such as detention facilities, the criminal justice system, and labelling reproduce deviants; ③ Acquire the perspective to analyse the process by which deviance becomes a social problem, including media representations of crime and delinquency and the reactions of others. labelling, and other mechanisms reproduce deviants;; and ④ to be able to critically examine the meaning of crime and deviance in contemporary society using specific case studies.

【Course Contents】

This course examines phenomena surrounding crime and delinquency from the perspective of the sociology of deviance. The sociology of deviance focuses not on viewing issues such as crime and delinquency as problems stemming from the qualities or personality of specific actors, but rather on how these phenomena have been defined and problematised within particular social rules, institutions, and interactions. This course will specifically address points such as: how societal rules function on the premise of deviance's existence; how detention facilities and correctional systems can themselves reproduce deviants; how an actor's motivation is influenced by others' expectations and reactions; how deviance is socially constructed rather than inherent in the act itself; and how labelling creates deviants.
Through this course, we will examine not only deviant acts themselves but also the surrounding norms, power dynamics, interactions, and social reactions. We will clarify how deviance becomes established as a social problem and how it is given meaning within people's everyday lives. The aim of this course is to reconsider deviance not as an “individual problem” but as a “phenomenon reflecting the nature of society”.
