【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

「社会問題の社会学」に関する理論的な理解を深め、現実の社会現象を、「社会問題の社会学」の視点から検討できるようになる。

To deepen theoretical understanding of the sociology of social problems and to develop the ability to examine real-world social phenomena from the perspective of the sociology of social problems.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

社会学は、古くから様々な「社会問題」に関心を寄せてきた。しかし、そもそも「社会問題」とは、なんだろうか。いったい、誰にとって、それは問題なのか。たとえば、「陰謀論」と呼ばれる議論はそれを唱える人々にとっては、なにかしらの「問題」を提起しているとも言える。
なにが「社会問題」であるのかは、社会の特定の状況だけではなく、その状況を認識して「問題」だと思う、人々の側にかかっている。

この授業では、「社会問題の社会学」と呼ばれる領域、および、その前提となる、「機能主義」などの社会学的な議論を概観する。
とくに、ハワード・S・ベッカーの「ラベリング論」や、マルコム・スペクターとジョン・キッセの「社会問題」に対する構築主義的なアプローチを学ぶことを通して、社会のなかで特定の人や出来事が、さまざまなレトリックのなかで「社会問題」として呼ばれるようになっていく、社会的な過程を検討する。
このことを通して、社会学者の側で、特定の出来事を「社会問題」として決定するのではなく、社会で生活している人々の観点に即して、社会の中で「社会問題」が構築されていく過程を明らかにする。

授業終盤では、「社会問題」がどのように問題として語られているかという観点から、構築主義と深い関係にあるエスノメソドロジーや概念分析の議論についても検討する。

Sociology has long been concerned with various “social problems.” Yet what, in the first place, is a “social problem”? For whom is it a problem? For example, arguments labeled as “conspiracy theories” may be understood by those who advance them as raising certain “problems.” What counts as a “social problem” depends not only on particular social conditions, but also on the people who recognize and define those conditions as problematic.

This course provides an overview of the field known as the sociology of social problems, along with foundational perspectives such as functionalism. In particular, students will examine Howard S. Becker’s labeling theory and the constructionist approach to social problems developed by M.Spector and J.Kitsuse. Through these works, the course analyzes the social processes by which specific individuals or events come to be described and recognized as “social problems” within various rhetorical contexts.

Rather than presuming that sociologists can determine in advance what constitutes a “social problem,” the course focuses on how social problems are constructed within society from the standpoint of those living in it.

In the final part of the course, attention will turn to discussions in ethnomethodology and conceptual analysis. These approaches are closely related to constructionism.
