Students will be able to explain transformations of society and space in Tokyo with sociological concepts.
This course offers a sociological study of the spatial structure of cities. Urban sociologists have studied the interactions between social and spatial processes of urban growth. Students will learn about such theories of urbanisation and cross-cultural variations in the spatial structure of cities. Topics include the impact of industrialisation, globalisation and gentrification.

東京の社会-空間構造の特徴について、社会学的概念を用いて説明できるようになる。
現代都市の社会-空間構造の変容過程について、社会学的概念を用いて説明できるようになる。

都市空間は建物や人々が単に雑然と集まっているだけに見えるが、そうした建造物群やそれらを生み出す人々の分布を丁寧に観察すると、実はある種のパターンが存在することがわかる。このパターンを都市の空間構造と呼ぼう。このような空間構造の成り立ちには、どのような要因が働いているのだろうか？様々な都市を比較したり、ひとつの都市の過去と現在とを比較すると、社会変動に伴って空間構造も変化していくことが分かる。この授業では、現代の東京を中心的な考察の対象に据え、以上のような都市の空間構造の社会的側面を理解するための手だてについて、都市社会学および隣接する諸分野（地理学や都市史など）の知見を紹介しながら解説する。
