Students will develop a foundation for examining the society and culture of the United States from multiple perspectives.
Through case studies of Native Americans, we can reconsider and gain new perspectives on our own culture and society.
American society has evolved by continually oscillating between two conflicting images of Native peoples.
This lecture examines the contemporary situation of the United States by surveying how the presence of Indigenous peoples has influenced American society and culture, and how Indigenous societies and cultures have been transformed within the American nation-state.

アメリカ先住民の事例から、私たちの文化や社会を捉えなおすことができる。

アメリカ社会は、先住民についての相反する二つのイメージの間を揺れ動き続けることで変化してきた。本講義では、アメリカの社会と文化に先住民の存在がいかなる影響を与えてきたか、アメリカという国家において先住民の社会と文化がいかに変容したかを概観することで、現代アメリカの状況を検討する。なお、授業スケジュールは、受講生の人数や関心などに応じて変更される可能性がある。
