In this seminar, we will examine Islam and Muslim societies with a focus on the changes and diversifications that have taken place in the modern and contemporary periods. The goal is to cultivate a flexible perspective and way of thinking about societies and cultures in the modern world.
In recent years, the number of Muslims has been estimated at about a quarter of the world's population, and knowledge of this religion is essential for understanding the world's diverse societies. In this seminar, students will acquire a basic knowledge of Islam and also study the changes and diversification of thought and practice in modern and contemporary times (including topics such as modernization and westernization, secularism and Islamism, and the development of debates on gender). In order to conduct research on topics of their own interest, students will also learn basic research skills, such as how to locate and read literature and sources, and how to write a research paper.

４～７回では講読する文献が指定される。報告担当者はレジュメ作成などの準備をし、他のゼミ参加者も必ず文献を読み、疑問点や論点をもって演習に参加すること。８、９回目は報告準備のために必要な情報収集・情報共有を行う。１０回目以降、自由トピックについて受講生が報告を行う。
In the 4th to 7th sessions, the reading materials will be specified. The person in responsible for the report will prepare a resume, etc. All participants are expected to read the assigned readings and participate in the seminar by asking questions and raising points. In sessions 8 and 9, necessary information will be gathered and shared in preparation for the final presentations. Beginning in session 10, students will give presentations on topics of their choice.

本演習では、イスラームと呼ばれる宗教に着目し、とくにその影響を受けた諸社会の近現代における変化や多様化について学ぶ。それを通して、現代世界に対する柔軟な視点や思考方法を培うことを目指す。

イスラーム教の信徒（ムスリム）は近年、世界人口の約４分の１を占めると言われ、これに関する知識は、現代世界の諸社会を理解するために必要不可欠になりつつある。本演習の前半では、イスラームに関する基礎的知識を得るとともに、近現代における思想や実践の変化や多様化（近代化や西洋化、世俗主義やイスラーム主義、ジェンダーをめぐる議論の展開など）について学ぶ。演習後半では、自ら関心のあるトピックを調査するための、文献の探し方、読み方、レジュメの作成方法など、研究を進めるための基礎的なスキルを習得する。
