The goal of this course is to help students develop an appropriate understanding of social research related to music and to accurately grasp its position in contemporary society.
Sociology has been intrigued by music since its inception. Music is, however, an "ephemeral" object that cannot be seen or touched. Sociology, in addressing this aspect of music, has chosen to explore this difficult object formally by utilizing a wide variety of research methods and social theories. In this course, we will investigate some of the ways in which sociology objectifies the phenomenon of music by unpacking one of the various techniques of social research: quantitative social research.

本講の目標は、音楽に係わる社会調査を適切に理解し、その現代社会における位置づけを正確に把握することである。

社会学がその初期から関心を向けてきた対象のひとつに音楽がある。しかしながら音楽は、見ることも触れることもできないような、いわば「儚い」対象である。対象のこうした特徴を引き受けるなかで社会学が選んだのは、多種多様な調査技法や社会理論を活用することによって、この捉えがたい対象を形式的に探求するという方途である。本講では、様々な社会調査技法の中のひとつである定量的な社会調査研究を紐解くことによって、社会学が音楽という現象を対象化する方法の一端を分析的に検討する。
