Students will study structural conditions and historical contexts in which people with specific ethnic attributes lived. Based on these, students will understand various ethnicity phenomena found in social relations and social actions. In addition, we will try to analyze these social phenomena based on data, including case studies and relevant statistics. And let us listen to guest speaker’s life story to deepen our understanding and organize findings.
We will study ethnicity about various foreigners living in Japan. In this class, I will explain comprehensively major ethnic groups; they are consisted of ‘old comer’ and ‘newcomer’, then I will show students perspective on ethnicity construction and challenge preconceptions about them. Ethnicity phenomena are not derived automatically or directly from nationalities, ethnic cultures, or races. Students will reexamine Japanese society from perspective of rencontres of individual, as a field where various ethnic relations have been built.

エスニシティの諸現象が、何らかの民族的属性をもつ人（びと）が身を置く歴史的文脈、構造的条件から、また彼／彼女の社会関係と行為において捉えられることを理解する。さらに、そうした社会事象について、事例や統計等のデータに基づいて傾向を分析したり、ゲストスピーカーの話を聞いて理解を深め、議論することができる。

さまざまな在日外国人におけるエスニシティについて考える。授業では便宜上在日外国人をオールドカマーおよびニューカマーに分け、それぞれへの固定的見方に挑戦していく。あるエスニックな属性を持つ個人において、自動的・一義的に「国籍」、「民族文化」、「人種」等からエスニシティ現象が生じるとは言えない。彼／彼女そして「私」という個人あるいは集団が出会う場として、またさまざまな社会的条件のせめぎあいの中で関係形成する場としての日本社会を、エスニシティの視点から捉え直す機会にしたい。
