Studying people's lives, food and agriculture in Europe, America and Japan, the students will be acquainted with multiple points of view concerning the relationship between nature and human beings.
At present we are faced with imminent environmental issues such as pollution, climate change, natural disaster, nature conservations and preservation. Just as imminent is an issue of environmental justice that includes global north and global south.
In this course, "Environment and Human-Beings," we will discuss how human beings related themselves with nature in the past and what are considered ideal at present.
1. We will study, for example, the nature-oriented endeavors that have garnered attention, such as the nature conservation movement and regenerative organic farming, thus giving an overview how nature perspective in the world has changed.
2. By looking at people's lives, food and agriculture at various places in the past, we will get different perspectives from ancient times to the present, and from the local to the global.
3. Focusing upon intermediaries that act between nature and people, such as medicines, flowers and desserts, we will delve into the lifestyles and feelings of people of different eras.
4. We will furthermore explore changes in the concept of market, money and community in relation to the natural environment.
The series of lectures are expected to help the students, faced with present environmental issues, acquire multifaceted perspectives on the relationship between nature and people.

現代に連なる人びとの暮らし、特に食・農に焦点を絞り、欧米、日本を中心に自然観の変遷を辿り、自然と人との関係を多元的に捉えられるようになる。

公害、気候変動、災害に加え、自然保護や保全、南北問題を含む環境正義など、環境にかかわる課題は多岐にわたる。これらの課題は、煎じ詰めれば自然と人との関係から派生している。そこで、本講義では原点にかえり、人びとが自然とどのような関係を結んできたか、現在どのような理想が語られているか考える。
たとえば、
① 自然保護運動からガーデニング、食と自然をつなぐ有機農業、農業からリジェネラティブ・オーガニックなど近年注目される自然志向の試みを見ることで、世界の自然観の変遷を読み解く。
② 人の暮らし、特に食・農から見える世界を古代から現代、ローカルからグローバルまで視野を広げ捉えていく。
③ 薬、花、デザートなど、自然と人との仲立ちをするモノにも注目し、様々な時代の人びとの暮らしと心情を掘り下げ、考察する。
④ 自然環境との関係で、市場や貨幣、コミュニティ観の変化を探る。
今日起きている現象を読み解くため、このような課題を通し、自然と人との関係を捉える多角的視座を学ぶ。
