This class examines development processes of urban space and its transformation under the expansion of capitalism world-wide. Each lecture picks up examples of those processes both in the North and the South, paying special attention to historical and geographical contexts. Students are expected to obtain a perspective to understand various phenomena on cities and region within a global context and cultivate"imagination for others".

・出欠に代えてリアクションペーパーや小課題の提出を求めることがある。フィードバックは基本的に次の授業内で行う。
・ゲストスピーカーを呼ぶ可能性がある。
本授業では、世界的な資本主義の拡大とその下で生ずる都市空間の形成と変容について、地球の北と南、それぞれにおける具体的地域の文脈や歴史的諸局面に即して学ぶ。国内外の都市や地域に関わる現象をグローバルな文脈で理解する視座を獲得し、「他者への想像力」を培うことを目標とする。本授業は社会学部現代文化学科の教育課程編成方針「形成期」「完成期」にあたる専門教育選択科目である。

授業内容は、①北における産業化と都市化、②グローバル都市の形成と地球規模での南北関係の再編、③南の様々な地域における農村社会と都市化、④南の大都市と人々の生活・文化、⑤南におけるグローバル化と都市空間・社会の変容、⑥①～⑤を踏まえた上での都市論の再考といったテーマから構成される。 本授業は、社会学部現代文化学科「都市とコミュニティ領域」の「発展科目」にあたる（科目ナンバリング参照）。
