【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to cultivate critical thinking skills that enable students to explore and engage in **practical explorations** of how to navigate the challenges posed by contemporary society, where the relationship between humanity and "post-nature" is being redefined. Students will investigate why this era is referred to as "post-nature," what kinds of explorations are being conducted, and the challenges that arise in the process. By deepening their understanding, students will develop the ability to thoughtfully and actively address these pressing issues.

【Course Contents】

To achieve a sustainable society, we need the ability to design systems that effectively manage and circulate resources based on scientific knowledge and data—essential for individuals and communities survival. Such ideas about sustainability seem to be widely shared, as reflected in initiatives like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Discussions surrounding climate change and justice add urgency to this "survival," propelling us to act, yet the absence of concrete measures in our daily lives often intensifies our frustration.

On the other hand, what does a sustainable society concretely look like? How would our lives unfold within it? When we attempt to envision this, it often proves surprisingly difficult. The stable "nature" upon which our societies historically relied can no longer be taken for granted. We now live in a planetary system profoundly altered by human activities—one marked by unprecedented uncertainty. How can we ensure the sustainable use and conservation of resources within this context? Could conceptualized notions of "nature," such as wilderness or satoyama (traditional Japanese landscapes), serve as guiding pillars? What role might "nature" or "life" created through biotechnology play in realizing a sustainable society, and how can we engage with these emerging forms?

Furthermore, as we grapple with "survival," how can we ensure justice among ourselves and across generations? What does it mean to be fair, and how might fairness be achieved? In a sustainable society, how can we pursue "living well," and in what ways? At the core of these reflections lies a fundamental question: What does the richness of our existence truly entail? The term "sustainable society" often seems to outpace our understanding without adequately addressing these questions.

This course will explore these complex questions by engaging with discussions from two closely related fields: environmental sociology and environmental ethics. Together, we will examine ethical principles and practical approaches for imagining and confronting the new forms of life and nature emerging from scientific and technological advancements. Recognizing the urgency of these issues, this course invites us to pause and reflect. Through shared dialogue and critical thinking, we aim to begin by stopping, considering, and exchanging ideas.
