【Course Objectives】

This course was first launched in 2018 at Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) and Sophia University, and was transferred to Rikkyo University beginning last academic year.

Rather than a conventional course on journalism theory or writing skills, this course explores how the media have been transformed by technological innovation over the past thirty years and how they are likely to evolve in the future. Together with students, these issues will be examined through discussions with a wide range of guest speakers active both inside and outside the media industry.

In previous iterations of the course at Keio SFC, Sophia University, and the University of the Sacred Heart, many students went on to careers in media organizations such as NHK, TBS, LINE Yahoo, Nikkei, Nippon Television, TV Tokyo, TBS Sparkle, and Dentsu. At the same time, others pursued careers at consulting firms including Accenture, Deloitte, and Mitsubishi Research Institute.

At present, newspaper companies’ total revenues have shrunk to roughly half of their levels in the 2000s, while in broadcasting, activist shareholders are demanding management reform at companies such as Fuji Television, signaling profound changes in corporate structures. In this environment, it is increasingly necessary to analyze the media industry coolly and rigorously as an industry. What companies now seek are individuals who possess the ability to adapt to such change.

In class, students will engage directly with primary materials. For example, the actual legal complaint filed by Yomiuri Shimbun against the generative AI company Perplexity, concerning issues related to “generative AI and journalism,” may be used as course text. Students are expected to read these materials carefully and participate actively in discussion. Accordingly, thorough preparation for each class is mandatory.

There are no shortcuts in life. The fact that students who have engaged seriously and diligently with this course have secured the jobs they hoped for clearly demonstrates this point.

The course also addresses generative AI. In an era when the use of generative AI is becoming commonplace, what is truly required are individuals who possess abilities that generative AI itself cannot replicate.

Generative AI is trained on existing materials published on the web and elsewhere, but it does not incorporate the most recent events. Nor does it absorb what you yourself have researched or the experiences you personally have had.

As companies have become aware that students are using generative AI to “standardize” their entry sheets, some have begun shifting directly to interviews as the first stage of recruitment. This reflects the fact that companies are seeking individuals who are not “averaged out,” but who possess originality and distinctive perspectives.

This course is designed to help students cultivate and internalize precisely those abilities.

【Course Contents】

The companies and topics covered in this course include the following:

Yomiuri Shimbun

LINE Yahoo

Nikkei (Nihon Keizai Shimbun)

Media-owned platforms such as TVer

NHK

The 1999 reporting on Johnny Kitagawa (Weekly Bunshun and Nippon Television)

Who Owns Fuji Television?

The New York Times

The Economist

Nakaumi Television Broadcasting

Generative AI and the media

Some sessions will feature guest speakers. For example, in the session on Fuji Television, Masumi Nishida of Dalton Investments—who submitted a shareholder-proposed slate of director candidates in opposition to the company’s own board nominees at Fuji Television’s 2025 annual shareholders’ meeting—will participate as a guest. In the session on The Economist, Executive Editor Daniel Franklin will join the class via Zoom from London.

The final two classes will be devoted to student team presentations. Each team will conduct independent research on how media are being transformed by technological innovation. The process will proceed through the preparation of a project proposal, an interim report, and a final presentation. Tutoring sessions may be held before or after class as needed.

ゲスト 川瀬達也 LINEヤフー株式会社 チーフ・ストラテジー・オフィサー室

Yahoo Japanはなぜ急成長したのか?1996年にソフトバンクによってスタートアップしたYahoo! Japan。
