Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to identify key sociological concepts and methods and explain how they help to understand the construction of the self, social structures, and institutions. Students will learn to formulate problem statements concerning the relationship between individual lives and larger society.

【Course Contents】

This course introduces students to major social theories, subfields, and research results in sociology. Students will explore what society is, how it affects individual lives, and how individuals mediate their relationship with society. The course provides students with the sociological imagination—the ability to connect personal experiences to larger social structures. Readings include social theories and empirical research on social institutions, stratification and inequality, symbolic interactions, and social movements. The course encourages critical reading, writing, and thinking. The knowledge students gain in this course is relevant to the real world. Students are expected to follow current events and use the concepts and methods learned in the course to explain social phenomena.
