This course aims to promote the followings:
- Better understanding of the family and its relation to the larger society
- Familiarity with concepts, theories, and methods of sociology
- An ability to pose questions and engage in the discussion in a critical/logical manner
This course examines family and gender issues in Japan from sociological perspectives. Our focus will be on the family after modernization. We will explore a range of topics such as marriage/partnership, work, family formation, childbirth/childrearing, education, poverty, social welfare, and aging society. While we mainly look at Japanese cases, we will refer to examples from other countries as appropriate. Students are expected to attend class regularly and contribute to discussions and activities held during the class as both a leader and a participant.

Individual presentations may be changed to group presentations (depending on the number of students registered). |
There will be several homework assignments (i.e. reading and/or writing) and students are required to complete them by the due date (On average, approximately two hours per class). Students are also expected to review the material covered in class and prepare for the next class (Approximately one-two hours per class).
