The expected knowledge and abilities students can acquire from this course are below.
1.To help improve students' reading and writing skills for essential academic reading and writing in English.
2.To introduce students to various anthropological perspectives and approaches to understanding and analyzing current issues of contemporary human society and allow them to experiment with their writing in English.
3.To provide students with the current state of anthropological debates of cultural diversity and cultural conflicts of contemporary society.
4.To help students prepare for their future dealings with cultural diversity, differences, and conflicts of contemporary human society by providing them with the necessary skills for analytical thinking critically about cultural differences in an increasingly globalized world.
This course introduces students to the basics of cultural anthropology, which studies human society and cultures. In this course, students will examine the fundamental vital terms and various issues of cultural anthropology. Students are encouraged to investigate the complex interface between individuals, social groups, social structures, culture, and history and apply theoretical considerations of social and cultural anthropological analysis to critically interpret contemporary human society and cultures. The class consists of a lecture & discussion part and a student presentation. Students are required to engage in scholarly discussions actively.

1.Students' presentation weekly:
Each student selects one topic of interest to do a presentation and takes the lead in participating in class discussions weekly (from weeks 2 to 13). At least two days before the presentation, students must submit a presentation summary, about 200-300 words in length, comprising key issues and clarifications, examples or case studies, and comments.
2.Two short papers during the course:
Students must submit two short papers (700 words as a minimum requirement for each essay) during the course on weeks 6 and 9. The instructor will prepare questions for students to select for their paper writing.
3.Final paper:
At the end of the course, students will need to do mini ethnographic research to collect field data on their own time outside of class and write a mini ethnographic paper in English (1,000 words as a minimum requirement for the final report).

All assignments must be submitted to the instructor on time via email (which will be notified in class) before 4:00 p.m. Assignments not turned in on the date they are due will be penalized by deducting two scores down for each day they are late (for example, the total score of an assignment is 10. If it is turned in a day later, two scores will be deducted). The instructor will not accept assignments one week late (without valid reasons).
