This course aims to promote the followings:
- Better understanding of the family and its relation to the larger society
- Familiarity with concepts, theories, and methods of sociology
- An ability to pose questions and engage in the discussion in a critical/logical manner
This course examines family-related issues in Japan from sociological perspectives. Our focus will be on the family after modernization. We will explore a range of topics including marriage/partnership, work, childbirth/childrearing, gender roles, education, poverty, social welfare, and aging. Students are expected to attend class regularly and contribute to discussions and activities held during the class as both a leader and a participant.
