Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to give students a better understanding of the intersection between the streaming giant Netflix and the escalating role of AI in shaping what we watch, think, and do. We’ll apply theoretical lenses from Foucault, Han, Zuboff, and Harari, placing them squarely in dialogue with Netflix’s data-driven ecosystem. Through case studies like Black Mirror’s “Joan Is Awful,” “The Social Dilemma,” and “The Great Hack,” we’ll examine how streaming platforms―and the AI underpinning them―continuously redefine global communication, culture, and power dynamics. We will consider how new forms of media and their representations within media influence our current social realities.

【Course Contents】

Students will analyze films and TV shows (fiction and non-fiction) about new forms of media and their impact on society. Every class will consist of a lecture and a discussion session. Active participation by students is required.
