Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course examines how media and popular culture in the United States and Japan shape and reflect social issues, with special attention to the creation of fictional worlds, youth cultures, and consumer desire. We will explore how commercials, advertising, and pop-cultural narratives (manga, anime, film, TV shows, youth movements) construct ideologies and influence consumption patterns. Central to our study is the work of Slavoj Žižek on ideology and desire, alongside other critical theorists.

【Course Contents】

Students will engage in close readings, view documentaries or clips, and participate in discussions that compare these two cultural contexts every third session.
