Students will learn sociological approaches to the phenomenon of the self through examination of the relationships between varied "selfs" and others, and will broaden their imagination concerning the social depth of problems surrounding the contemporary individual and communication.
The distinctiveness of the sociological approach to the self lies in analyzing the generation and transformation of the self in relation to others. In order to understand its incisiveness, the course will show that “individuality,” “subjectivity,” and “the inner side,” considered evidence of the uniqueness of “I,” are types of illusion created within specific social relationships. Such a paradigm shift is necessary for fundamental consideration of issues occurring in the contemporary self and in relationships between the self and others. However, understanding that the notion of "I" is an illusion does not allow us to easily escape from that illusion. The course also considers the sociological/existential reasons for why we adhere to "I" and why we struggle in communication with others.

さまざまな自己と他者の関係を検討することを通じて、自己という現象に対する社会学的なアプローチを学び、現代の個人とコミュニケーションをめぐる問題の社会的な奥行きについて想像力を広げる。
Students will learn sociological approaches to the phenomenon of the self through examination of the relationships between varied "selfs" and others, and will broaden their imagination concerning the social depth of problems surrounding the contemporary individual and communication.
自己に対する社会学的アプローチの特徴は、自己の生成・変容を、他者との関係性において分析するところにある。この講義ではその切れ味を理解するために、〈私〉の固有性の証と考えられている「個性」や「主体性」や「内面」が、特定の社会関係のなかで生み出された一種の幻想であることを示していく。現代の自己および自己と他者の関係において起きている問題を根本から考えるには、こうした発想の転換が必要である。ただし、〈私〉をめぐる観念が幻想であると知ったところで、私たちはその幻想から簡単に脱け出せるわけではない。私たちはなぜ〈私〉に固執するのか、なぜ他者とのコミュニケーションに悩むのか、その社会学的／実存的な理由についても考える。
