Social media and generative AI have intensified the "post-truth" phenomenon. People became swayed by unsubstantiated information and emotional opinions rather than fact-based newspaper information. While "media criticism" abounds, much of it is unfounded assumption, and claims that the "the media is corrupt" are often made because the person making the claim has only been exposed to such information. This course outlines the fundamental ideas, norms, and principles of journalism, which even those working in journalism are unfamiliar with. Then, it examines the most pressing issues facing the internet and AI era: why people tend to blame everything on the media, and whether there is an opportunity for the revival of journalism in this challenging situation.
This course begins with a look at the case of 19th-century Chicago, where a typical machine politics emerged amidst an ethnic mosaic of explosive population growth and journalists’ reform movement. Then, it provides a comparative overview of the development of freedom of speech and freedom of the press in three countries, beginning in 17th-century England and flourishing in France and America. Thereafter, this course focuses primarily on the United States, examining the market-based newspapers, penny press, the professionalization movement by journalists that developed in the wake of progressivism at the end of the 19th century and its impact, and the concept of objectivity that emerged in the 20th century. This course concludes with a comparative examination of French journalism, which developed in a way that distinguished it from the American style. Finally, it presents findings from socio-cultural historical research on journalism over the past half century.

ソーシャルメディアと生成AIの普及により「ポスト・トゥルース」（脱真実）の現象が強まり、事実を基にした新聞情報よりも裏づけのない情報・感情的意見のほうに人々が動かされる事態が散見する。「メディア批判」も世にあふれるが、多くは根拠のない思い込みであり、「メディアは腐敗している」は口にする当人がそうしたものしか接していないからである。本講義では、ジャーナリズムの実務に就く者も明るくないジャーナリズムに関わる基本的な考え、規範、理念とその変遷を概説し、そのうえでネット、AIの時代に一番問われていること、いわゆるメディア批判ではなく、あえて言えばなぜ人々はすべてメディアのせいにしたがるのか、厳しい状況の中でジャーナリズムの再生の契機はあるのか検討する。

まず爆発的な人口増加、エスニックモザイク状況下で典型的なマシーン政治が生まれ、それに対するジャーナリズムによる改革運動も盛んだった19世紀シカゴの事例を検討。そのうえで、17世紀イギリスにはじまり、フランス・アメリカで開花した言論・プレスの自由をめぐる３国比較発達史を概観。以降はアメリカを主舞台にして、市場で生きる新聞・ペニープレス、19世紀末の革新主義の追い風で展開されたジャーナリストのプロフェッショナル化運動とそれがもたらしたもの、さらには20世紀になって生み出された客観報道理念を考察する。アメリカ流とは一線を画して発達してきたフランスのジャーナリズムを比較検討し、最後にこの半世紀ほどのジャーナリズムに関する米仏の社会文化史的研究の知見を紹介する。
