【Course Objectives】

By the end of this course, students will be able to: (1) understand the difference between "gender difference" and "gender role", (2) think logically and ethically about the influences of applying gender differences and gender roles to individuals, (3) think logically and ethically about the significance and limitations of scientific research that attempts to discover gender differences.

【Course Contents】

A common belief deeply rooted in Japanese society that girls and boys, men and women, differ--not only physically but also in important aspects of behavior, attitudes, and ability will be critically examined. We will first review the concepts of "gender difference" and "gender role" from a sociological perspective. Then, we will discuss the problems of applying gender differences and gender roles to individuals with familiar examples. In the end, we will critically examine scientific research that attempts to discover gender differences in terms of the validity of the findings and the limitations of implementing them in real life.
