The goals of this class as follows
To recognize the historical transformation of the consumer society in Japan into the information technology era.
To learn a method which can make us aware of the roots of our present perspective in history and emancipate us from it.
To grasp the actual image of the culture in our contemporary history.
The consumer society is a form of capitalism, which is conditioned by the mass production and the mass media. In the society, whereas the process of production and disposal of commodities are hidden from our eyes, each commodity is exposed and lit up in the cities or the mass media, onto which we projected our dreams. With the diffusion of digital devices, this form of capitalism is changing. What is it like to live in the age of information technology era in which we are living?
With this actual question, we will look back the history of Japan in the post war era 1955-1995. In the lecture, we will use audiovisual aids to grasp the images of the past concretely. I wish these lectures would give you the opportunity to criticize your way of thinking and find the way of life in the next era, though recognizing the rise and fall of a consumer society in Japan historically and intuitively.

①日本における消費社会がどのようにして現在のような情報化の時代に転換したかを歴史的に知る。
②私たちの物の見かたの根を歴史の中に見出し、その見方から自由になる技法を学ぶ。
③今、必要な文化を現代史の中に見出す。

消費社会とは、商品の大量生産とマス・メディアを条件に形成された資本主義のひとつの歴史的かたちでした。そこでは、商品の生産過程や廃棄過程は私たちの視界から遠ざけられ、ひとつひとつの商品が都市の中、マス・メディアの中で煌めき、金を持った人々はとしてそこに夢を映していました。こうした消費社会という資本主義の形式は、情報端末の普及と共に、変化しつつあります。今、私たちが生きている情報化の時代とはどんな時代なのでしょうか。
本講義では、こうした現代的な問いをもって、日本の戦後史（1955年から1995年）を振り返ります。講義では、具体的な歴史像をつかむため、当時流行した映画や音楽など視聴覚教材を用います。日本の消費社会の盛衰を過去の流行からとらえることを通じて、ご自身がもっている物の見かたを吟味し、次代を生きるための文化をつかむきっかけにしていただければ幸いです。
