This course aims at:
- To know the basics of veganism
- To obtain good understandings about multi aspects of veganism and insights in the related fields
Eating is more than appetite or joy. It is a complicated practice composed of many social and cultural factors. What we have on the table is all political. Eating is related to culture, economy, gender, race, species, international relations, philosophy, ethics, religion, and almost every aspect of society you can think of.
This course examines veganism by paying particular attention to the politics of food. The number of vegans has increased across the globe. Is this a shallow boom as with many of the other “fashion foods” that have appeared and disappeared over years? This course suggests that this is not the case and discusses the multitude of environmental, political, and social aspects affecting veganism, instead of riding on the fancy trend of vegan diets.
This course carefully considers veganism and related fields: Feminism, animal studies, animal rights, posthuman, multi-species anthropology, globalization, climate crisis and other subjects will be examined. The goal is to build a synthetic understanding of veganism that both refers to and is referred by these fields.
Disclaimers: (1) This course discusses little about the practicalities of veganism e.g., vegan menus, recipes, posh cafes, health, or nutrition. If you want to attain a practical knowledge of veganism, this course is not for you. (2) This course discusses the death of animals and violence inflicted on them and shows visual images of killing of animals. Those who do not like these topics and images are advised to think carefully before registration.

本講義では授業に関連する参考文献が課される。参考文献は書籍の抜粋や論文で、学習支援システムを用いて配付する。講義はそれらを読んでいることを前提として行われる。
よって、各回の予習として、履修者は事前に参考文献を読むこと、また不明点について調べることが求められる。
また、復習として、授業内容の再確認と参考文献の読み直しが必要となる。個別具体的な作業が必要な場合は授業内で指示する。課題を課す場合も授業内で指示する。

This course aims at:

食は単なる本能ではないし、楽しみや悦びにもとどまらない。それはたくさんの社会的な要素が入り交じった複雑な領域であり、その複雑さにおいてテーブルの上に広げられるものとは政治にほかならない。食べることは、文化や経済やジェンダーや人種や種や国際関係や哲学や倫理や宗教やそのほかあらゆるところにつながっている。
本講義はこの食の政治性に注意を払いながらヴィーガニズムを考える。ヴィーガン（肉をはじめとする動物性のものを食べない人）は近年、世界的に増加しているが、それはポップな流行なのだろうか？ これまでたくさんの新しい食べ物が「ファッションフード」として現れては消えていったように？ 本講義はそうではないと考え、ヴィーガニズムを流行として一面化するのではなく、その多面的な広がりを議論する。
そのために本講義はヴィーガニズムに関連する領域の思想と実践を検討する。具体的には、フェミニズム、動物研究、動物の権利論、ポストヒューマン、マルチスピーシーズ人類学、グローバリゼーション、気候変動などをめぐる近年の論考を取り上げ、それらを相互に参照する体系的・総合的なヴィーガニズムの理解を作ることを目指す。
よって、本講義はヴィーガンの食事やレシピやおしゃれなレストランなどを紹介するものではない。栄養や健康などフードサイエンスを大きく取り上げることもない。そうした実用的情報を期待する向きには合わないことに注意されたい。また、講義内では動物への暴力について多く論じるほか、屠畜など動物の死を含む映像を使用するため、それらの話題やビジュアルが苦手な人は履修前に慎重に検討してほしい。
Eating is more than appetite or joy. It is a complicated practice composed of many social and cultural factors. What we have on the table is all political.
