This course has three objectives as below
1.Students will learn basics of area studies of South Asia
2.Students will understand gender situation of Indian society.
3.Students will rethink their own society in a comparative point of view.
In this course, firstly students will learn Indian society consisted of several differences, including religions, castes, ethnicity, languages, class, region, gender and sexuality and so on, which have been changed and formed as current situation through historical processes, especially colonial era. Secondly, students will understand this complicated and varied society through examining specific gender situations and issues, covering labour, nationalism, Bollywood movies and religious minority, violence against women, political participation of women, women’s empowerment and women’s movements etc.
This course will be consisted of lectures basically, including discussions and watching documentary movies in some cases.

本授業では、南アジア社会（特にインド）におけるジェンダーの状況を学ぶことで、異なる社会を⽣きる⼈びととのつながりを意識しながら、⽇本社会の状況をリフレクシブに捉えなおすための「⽐較」の視点を養うことを⽬標とする。
This course has three objectives as below
1.Students will learn basics of area studies of South Asia
2.Students will understand gender situation of Indian society.

近年、インドは経済規模、人口規模ともに世界においてその存在感を増しているが、同時に「宗教対立」や「女性に対する暴力」も広く報道などで取り上げられることも多くなっている。一見、「伝統的」、「インド固有」とみなされがちなそれらの事象は、歴史的過程において「つくられ」、「変化」してきた。
本授業では、まず、インド社会は、民族、宗教、カースト、言語、ジェンダー、セクシュアリティ、階級、農村―都市間格差などの文化的社会的経済的差異の諸要素が互いに連関し、構成されていることを学ぶ。また、これらの差異は歴史的に形成されてきたことを踏まえて理解する必要がある。さらに、ジェンダーの状況や課題を検討することを通じて、この複雑で多様な社会の実相を理解する。具体的には、労働、ナショナリズム、ボリウッド映画とマイノリティ、女性に対する暴力、女性の政治参加、女性運動などのテーマを取り上げる。
基本的に講義である。写真や映像資料、フィクションの映画なども利用しながら講義する。
