（1）Students will acquire a basic knowledge of modern American history.
（2）Students will learn social issues in America and understand their historical backgrounds.
What is the background to the problems facing the contemporary world? How do people act to improve and solve them? In this "modern American history" lecture, we will close in on people’s activities in the past and contemplate their historical meaning from the perspective of American history. This lecture focuses on racism, gender discrimination, and labor problems. These key aspects will help you understand what is happening in the U.S. today, and how people search for the realization of a better society. With the midterm elections approaching this year, this lecture will show the structural problems of the second Trump administration, and the trial and error efforts by American citizens to change its society. The lecturer looks forward to seeing students who are interested in American history, contemporary history, and domestic and international issues.

（2）現代アメリカで争点となっている社会問題と、その歴史的背景への関心を高める。

現代世界が抱える問題には、どのような背景があるのか。その問題を改善・解決するために、人びとはどのように考え行動したのか。本講義では過去に生きた人びとの営為に触れ、現代に生きる我々への問いかけを、アメリカ史から考えていきます。本講義は、人種主義、ジェンダー差別、労働問題を手掛りに、現代アメリカで起こっていることの歴史的背景を体系的に学び、よりよい社会の実現に向けて模索した人びとにも注目していきます。今年は中間選挙を控えておりますので、折々に第2次トランプ政権の構造的問題と、社会を変えるためのアメリカ市民による試行錯誤についても紹介していきます。アメリカ史、現代史、社会問題（国内外問わず）に関心のある皆さんの受講をお待ちしています。
