The objective of this course is to gain knowledge about language use in real-life situations, which is explored in the field of sociolinguistics, and to further develop a broad perspective on the role of language in our social life and its implications.
The first half of the lecture will focus on the language use by different social factors (i.e., attribution, context, geographical and physical environments) through the findings and theories developed in sociolinguistic studies. In the latter half, we will cover various theories from the neighboring areas of pragmatics, linguistic anthropology, cognitive linguistics, and conversation analysis. Although each class is implemented in a lecture style, active learning through group discussion is also strongly encouraged and conducted in each lesson. There will be homework for which you will analyze some linguistic data in almost every class. Group presentation at the end of the semester will be included.

私たちの社会的生活の多くはことばを介さずには成り立ちません．本講義では，そのような人間の社会性の根幹をなす言語が日常的な文脈でどのように使われ，どのような社会学的意味をもたらしているのかについて探求する社会言語学の知見を概観し，様々なアプローチ，視点から社会における言語使用について学ぶことを目的とします．

学期の前半では，言語使用にかかわる様々な社会的要因（属性，文脈，地理的，物理的環境等）について，社会言語学の理論を講義を中心に学びます．後半では，語用論，言語人類学，認知言語学，会話分析などの社会言語学周辺領域の理論についても取り扱います．授業は講義形式で行いますが，毎回関連するトピックについてグループディスカッションも行いますので積極的に参加して下さい．また，言語データを分析する課題をほぼ毎回課しますので，必ず提出すること．学期末にグループで発表も行う．
