The primary goal of this course is to explore contemporary theory related to social media. Through four topics: parasocial relationships, content creators, emotional labor, and trolling, students will gain an understanding of how social media influences the way we communicate.
The secondary goal of this course is to practice critical reading for summary and discussion. Through short readings and reflective journal writing, students will practice catching key information, reading for pattern and theme, and expanding on ideas through their own writing.
There are four units: parasocial relationships, content creators, emotional labor, and trolling. After each unit, students will complete a written reflection on the topic covered, and prepare to discuss these reflections in class (a total of four journals).
Each course meeting will have a lecture containing key points, followed by a quiz reviewing these points. There is a midterm project and final test.
