By the end of this course, students will be able to explain key concepts in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), including factors such as age, motivation, and goals of language learning, and describe the major developmental stages of Bilingual First Language Acquisition (BFLA). Students will develop the ability to read and discuss English-language texts on language acquisition and to relate research findings to real-world contexts. In addition, students will acquire basic research skills, including designing interviews and analyzing simple data. The course will culminate in the presentation of student-designed interview projects.
This course covers major topics in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Bilingual First Language Acquisition (BFLA). Students examine how second languages are learned, with attention to age effects, vocabulary acquisition, motivation and attitudes, the relationship between SLA research and language teaching, and the goals of language education. The course also explores how bilingual children acquire language from birth through the preschool years. In addition, the course introduces basic research methods, including interviewing techniques and data analysis, and concludes with student presentations of their interview projects. *This course may involve some group work (subject to change depending on the number of enrolled students).
