This course is designed to provide students the basic knowledge of social linguistics, focusing on the topic of “World Engishes”. Students will learn about the increasing users of English around the world and gain insight into how the varieties of Englishes developed over the history. Through this course, students will use their higher order thinking skills such as evaluating, analyzing and creating to obtain a deeper understanding of the topic of Global Englishes.
In this course, the students will watch academic lectures, read articles and text chapters in English, As they learn the content, they will note-take and build a glossary list of the necessary technical terms and prepare for a collaborative session in class. They will be encouraged to use their critical thinking skills and discuss the given topics to deepen their understandings. They will also present their research projects on the varieties of Englishes in groups at the end of the course.

At Rikkyo University, students are required to spend 45 hours of study (including class time) per credit. Please prepare for classes and review the materials accordingly.
