備考/ NotesNotes |
This course is designed to invoke in-depth discussions from a variety of perspectives -- in particular through popular media -- about the current standing that Japan has in the world, during what appears to be a major pivot point in the country’s modern history.
The Cool Japan Policy and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have been used as a prominent motivational goal in national policies involving a wide range of industries and organizations, shifting Japan’s traditional and popular culture – as well as its various subcultures – into the global mainstream consciousness. Later its postponement and the subsequent policies tackling the coronavirus pandemic added to the international spotlight on Japanese idiosyncrasies. What are the major points of discourse arising from this situation, and what are the key socioeconomic, sociocultural and political factors governing these discussions? Through observation of a broad range of topics we will attempt to engage with these questions and approach a wider understanding of the issues at hand.
1 | Introduction: Constructed Images of Japan |
2 | The “Cool Japan” Policy |
3 | “Japonisme” versus “Cool Japan” |
4 | “Japaneseness” versus Universality in Global Media |
5 | Post-war Japanese popular culture and society |
6 | Anime and Tezuka |
7 | 1960s Student uprisings |
8 | The “Otaku”: domestic and global perspectives |
9 | 1970s-80s: The Anime Boom |
