By the end of this course, students will be able to:
a) Understand the historical development of personal narratives in modern Japan;
b) Analyze ego-documents as historical sources; and
c) Critically understand the relationship between modern subjectivity and social and cultural context.
This course examines the histories of personal narratives and explores personal documents (ego-documents) in modern Japan from a historical perspective. It investigates how forms of self-expression, such as diaries and school compositions, evolved alongside modernization and the rise of individualism. The course also examines how the concept of the "inner self" was constructed within these texts and how personal histories intersected with broader social and historical contexts of modern Japan. Through the analysis of primary sources related to specific themes, students will develop an understanding of the diversity of personal narratives and its historical contexts. The course incorporates the use of primary materials housed in Rikkyo University's archives.

本講義では、個人文書を歴史資料として深く読み解くためのやる気と興味が求められます。一次史料分析では、戦前・戦後直後に書かれた手書きの文書を扱うので、解読に粘り強さが必要です。多様な自己表現やその背景にある歴史的文脈を探求する意欲を持って取り組んでください。
自分のノートパソコンまたはタブレット（キーボードつき）、または大学貸出のものを持参してください。
本講義を通じて、以下の能力や知識を習得することを目指す：
a) 近代日本における自己語りの歴史的発展を理解する
b) 個人文書（エゴ・ドキュメント）を歴史資料として分析する
c) 近代的主体と社会的・文化的文脈の関係性について批判的に理解する

本講義では、「自己語り」をテーマに、近代日本における個人文書（エゴ・ドキュメント）を歴史的に検討する。その中でも特に日記と学校作文に焦点を置き、それらにおける自己表現の形式が、近代化や個人主義の拡大とともにどのように変遷してきたかを考察する。さらに、「自己の内面」という概念がこれらの文書の中でどのように構築され、個人の歴史と社会の歴史がどのように交錯してきたかを探る。関連する一次資料の検討と分析を通じて、「自己語り」の多様性とその歴史的文脈を学ぶ。立教大学所蔵の一次史料を活用する予定である。学生の発表はプレゼンテーションとウェブサイト (Google Sites使用予定）の2形式で行う。
