By the end of this course, students will be familiar with various kinds of diaries written in modern Japan and will be able to understand the cultural and social meanings of diary writing in the context of modern Japanese history, as well as explain these meanings in academic language.
In this course, students will read diaries produced from the Meiji period through the postwar era, together with related scholarship, and examine how the practice of diary writing expanded, became socially embedded, and took root as a cultural form in modern Japanese history. Approaching diaries from the perspectives of modernization and language, educational history, material culture, gender, empire, and war, the course explores how diary writing shaped ways of recording the self and everyday life in modern Japan through close reading of diary sources and short writing exercises.

本科目では特別な専門知識は求めないが、史料を丁寧に読み、自分の言葉で考えをまとめる基本的な力が求められる。
履修生は、授業内で資料の閲覧や書き込みを行うため、各自ノートパソコンまたはタブレット等の情報端末を持参すること。
明治期から戦後にかけて日本語で書かれた多様な日記を史料として読み、関連研究を参照しながら、日記を書くことが日本近現代史の中でどのような文化的・社会的意味をもってきたのかを理解し、自らの言葉で説明できるようになることを目標とする。

近代日本では多くの日記が書かれてきた。本授業では、明治期から戦後にかけて書かれた日記や関連研究を読み、近代化と言語、教育史、物質文化史、ジェンダー、帝国、戦争といった視点から、日記を書くという行為が日本近現代史の中でどのように広がり、社会化され、文化として定着していったのかを検討する。具体的には、日記史料の読解や短い書き込みを通じて、近現代日本において日記を書く行為が自己や日常生活の記録のあり方をどのように形づくってきたのかを考察する。
