【Course Objectives】

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
a) Analyze the role of war memory in shaping Japan’s postwar identity and its relations with Asia.
b) Evaluate the key debates surrounding Japan’s wartime responsibility and reconciliation efforts.
c) Understand the political, social, and cultural dimensions of Japan’s war memory.
d) Discuss the evolution of historical narratives in postwar Japan, including the role of public commemorations and education.
e) Compare Japan's war memory with other nations' approaches to remembering and addressing wartime pasts.

【Course Contents】

This course examines Japan's war memory and its profound influence on the country's postwar identity and international relations, particularly with neighboring Asian countries. Focusing on Japan's memory of the Asia-Pacific War, we explore how narratives of war, trauma, and victimhood have evolved in Japan's public discourse and historical scholarship. The course covers key debates over wartime responsibility, apologies, memorials, textbooks, and political rhetoric, and considers how these issues continue to shape Japan's diplomacy and national identity. By engaging with primary and secondary sources, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complex ways war memory has shaped Japan’s relationship with Asia and the global community.
