| 備考/ NotesNotes |
By the end of this course, students will be able to analyze how war memory has shaped Japan's postwar identity and its relations with Asia, evaluate key debates surrounding wartime responsibility and reconciliation, and examine the political, social, and cultural dimensions of war memory in postwar Japan. Students will also develop the ability to compare Japan's approaches to remembering and addressing the wartime past with those of other countries.
This course examines Japan's war memory and its influence on the country's postwar identity and international relations, particularly with neighboring Asian countries. Focusing on Japan's memory of the Asia-Pacific War, the course explores how narratives of war have evolved in Japan's public discourse and historical scholarship. Topics include debates over wartime responsibility and apologies, the role of memorials, museums, and textbooks, and political rhetoric, and considers how these issues continue to shape Japan's diplomacy, the use of war memory in domestic and diplomacy. By engaging with primary and secondary sources, students will gain a deeper understanding of how war memory has shaped Japan's relations with Asia and its position in the global community.
