The course aims to help students develop skills to critically analyze and discuss the content of news articles, social media posts and other media content to protect them from mis/disinformation and give them the skills to verify information. It also aims to make students responsible consumers of media. Handouts and news articles will be analyzed for discussions on fake news, propaganda, censorship.
The course will consist of three main pillars. Tasks in and outside of class will involve reading, discussions, researching and reporting. Students will read and summarize news articles every week and summarize the news, write their own opinions on it and make discussion questions to share with classmate. Second, they will discuss media literacy and news literacy issues. Lastly, they will give presentations on their own analysis of ads, political campaigns or bias in news articles.

At Rikkyo University, students are required to spend 45 hours of study (including class time) per credit. Please prepare for classes and review the materials accordingly.
Every week, students must read a news article of their choice in English, summarize it, and write your opinion. For media literacy topics, students will read designated articles beforehand and answer comprehension questions. Do research if necessary. After each lesson, they will write a reflection of the previous lesson content.

All lessons will be conducted in English. Students must be able to comprehend and take part actively in class discussions in English. Handouts with clear instructions and visuals will be distributed for assistance.

TOEFL(iBT) 68, TOEFL(PBT) 520, IELTS 5.5, or TOEIC L&R 650.
