Notes

【Course Objectives】

In Advanced Seminar 2, students will decide on a topic, complete a literature review, and design a research plan for their senior thesis.

【Course Contents】

The theme of this seminar is “Interpreting in Public Services,” which aims to introduce and explore the profession of court interpreting along with linguistic needs in other public services. Possible thesis topics could be related to legal and ethical issues in court and medical interpreting, language access in emergency services (e.g., fire departments, disaster response teams), interpreter education, or a more general aspect of interpreting in public services. Upon identifying a thesis topic, students will identify knowledge, practical, and/or methodological gaps in existing research on their chosen topic through literature review and discussions. This process will help formulate and refine their research questions and map out the research design.
