This course explores various social phenomena related to media communication from theoretical, historical, and empirical perspectives to enhance the students' understandings and critical thinking of these phenomena. One central topic of this course focuses on the relationship between media and place. Some of the questions include whether media is leading to placelessness, or strengthens a sense of place, and how.
Through this course, the students will learn the basics of media and communication studies.
During the classes, we will discuss over the varying theories and perspectives to study media and communication and tackle with issues regarding technology, community, and how media engages with our life. In addition to introducing the theories and historical background, it invites the students to relate “Ikebukuro” with media. The course encourages the students to develop their own critical thinking about the media communication phenomena close to their life.
The course is composed of eleven sessions of lectures, two sessions of student presentations, and one in-class mid-term test.
