【Course Objectives】

The students will be able to understand the relationships between abstract ideas of development and cooperation policy practice. The course will focus on concepts such as human security with real-world examples such as the activities of JICA.
Discussion, debate, reading, and thinking are the critical elements of this course. From a Japanese & global perspective, the students must have the following skills.
> Understand international development & cooperation.
> Analyze and evaluate actors
> Apply theoretical frameworks to real-world case studies.
> Demonstrate interdisciplinary thinking
> Collaborate in group projects and discussions
> Communicate ideas and arguments clearly and persuasively
> Formulate informed opinions
> Cultivate ethical awareness and cultural sensitivity

【Course Contents】

The 14-week international development and cooperation course covers a range of crucial topics. It begins with an Introduction to International Cooperation, followed by explorations into Theories of International Development and Cooperation. Weeks progress to examining International Organizations & Multilateralism, Security Cooperation, and Conflict Resolution. Subsequent topics include Human Rights and International Law, Human Security focusing on JICA, Global Economic Governance, Trade, Development Cooperation, and Global Health. The course also addresses Environmental Cooperation and climate Change and concludes with discussions on Emerging Challenges, the Future of International Development & Cooperation, Group Presentations, and a Final Exam.

1 Week 1: Introduction to International Cooperation
Self-introductions and ice-breaking.
Explanation of assessment methods (participation, assignments, quizzes, presentations, and final exam).
Definitions, historical context, and significance of international development and cooperation.
2 Week 2: Theories of International Development
Lecture on modernization, dependency, world systems, neo-liberalism theories, and post-modern theories.

Lecture on realism, liberalism, constructivism, and other theoretical perspectives.

4 Week 4: International Organizations & Multilateralism
Lecture on the role and challenges of the UN and other global institutions;

5 Week 5: Security Cooperation and Conflict Resolution
Lecture on alliances, peacekeeping operations, and conflict prevention; Case studies of successful and failed security cooperation efforts.

Lecture on Human rights treaties, international courts, and humanitarian intervention.

Lecture on the Human security concept and how its applied by the Japanese International Development Cooperation Agency.

8 Week 8: Global Economic Governance and Trade
Lecture on the World Trade Organization, international financial institutions, and trade agreements; National economic interests versus development objectives.

Lecture on aid, sustainable development goals, and global health initiatives.

Students are required to study assigned reading materials to prepare for the next class. In addition, the in-class quiz questions will be based entirely on the assigned reading material. The quizzes account for 15% of the final grade, so students are strongly encouraged to study outside class hours.
