【Course Objectives】

The course introduces key debates and historical perspectives within cultural anthropology, aiming to help students:
・understand what matters in the field of anthropology and why it matters;
・develop the ability to understand concepts such as “human rights” and “poverty” not as fixed categories, but as dynamic realities shaped by the interaction of complex social systems.

【Course Contents】

Cultural anthropology is a discipline that examines humanity through the lens of culture. Anthropologists conduct research in sites known as fields, where they learn about people’s everyday practices and knowledge, and record these observations as ethnographies. The anthropological knowledge and ethnographic works accumulated through such research have offered perspectives that differ from values and ways of thinking often taken for granted in everyday life.
In this course, students will explore the history of anthropological thought and learn both the modes of thinking that anthropology has developed and the challenges the discipline has faced. Through the course, students are encouraged to engage with others who hold different values and practices within complex social systems, and to reflect on the possibilities that emerge from such differences.
In the final five sessions, the course will focus on medical anthropology, one of the subfields of cultural anthropology. Two of these sessions will address issues related to reproduction. Students are expected to be aware of this focus when enrolling in the course.
