【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will learn the fundamental knowledge of English linguistics, which explores the mechanisms and usage of the English language. The overall goal is to cultivate an understanding of English from the perspectives of intercultural communication and sociolinguistics by examining its structure and investigating communication styles, as well as the relationship between language, culture, and cognition.

【Course Contents】

In the first half of this course, we will explore the structure and function of English, as well as its usage (particularly its relationship with society, culture, and cognition), focusing especially on comparisons with Japanese. In the latter half, the concept of “World Englishes” is introduced, focusing on the diversity and dynamic spread of English in the modern world, examining English as a native language, second language, and foreign language. This course fosters an understanding of English as a diverse and dynamic language while aiming to enhance students' awareness and comprehension of its role in intercultural communication.
