【Course Objectives】

This class will help you to
• critically analyze race and racism in Japan from historical, economic, legal, and political perspectives
• explore and understand social inequality experienced by various mariginalized groups in Japan
• construct your own arguments, using data/evidence appropriately

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will critically analyze issues of race and racism in Japan, as well as discuss various problems facing ethnic minorities and how globalization impacts ethnic issues in Japan. The course focuses on discrimination against Ainu, Buraku, Zainichi Koreans, Okinawans, and foreign migrant workers. We will examine how race and ethnicity are conceptualized in Japan, and how the ideology of racial and cultural homogeneity has an impact on institutional, legal, and social discrimination against various ethnic groups.
