1) To critically examine the concept and practice of multiculturalism in Japan, focusing on historical and contemporary contexts.
2) To explore the intersections of race, ethnicity and nationality in shaping identity and societal structures.
3) To investigate the lived experiences of diverse minority groups, focusing on their challenges in an ethno-nationalist country.
4) To analyze policies, human rights debates, and identity politics to understand their impact on integration and equity in Japanese society.
5) To foster skills in engaging with complex societal issues, emphasizing empathy and informed advocacy.
The course will consist of lectures and guided discussions, as well as various forms of multimedia. Preparation before class and active participation in class discussions are required. The class will be very interactive, including weekly discussions and group presentation.

At Rikkyo University, students are required to spend 45 hours of study (including class time) per credit. Please prepare for classes and review the materials accordingly.
Students are required to do reading assignments and leave comments before the class. This preparation for class is evaluated as active class participation. Students will also need to work with teammates to prepare for the final group presentation, and have to work on their own final term paper.

TOEFL iBT 76,IELTS 6.0, TOEIC L&R 700, or TOEIC L&R IP 700.
