Notes

【Course Objectives】

Students will understand and be able to explain the role motivation plays in the language learning classroom. Students will be able to classify the roles of the student and the roles of the teacher regarding motivation to learn a language. Students will also be able to analyze the components of a language lesson in order to enhance student motivation in the classroom.

【Course Contents】

The course will cover the concept of motivation and how it can be defined and understood in a language learning setting. The course will then cover what a teacher can do to enhance student motivation, and also, what the learner needs to do in order to maintain motivation. The course will introduce how to measure motivation as well as the role of classroom materials. The course will begin, however, by covering where motivation comes from and how it develops.

The course will be carried out via a mix between lecture and discussion. Generally speaking, students read an assigned reading, discuss the reading based on discussion questions in groups, and have the topic reinforced via a class-level discussion. The class includes an assignment that students can choose to do on their own or as a group.
