備考/ NotesNotes |
The primary goal of this course is to understand the concept of "teenager" in the context of the 20th century United States. The idea of 'teenagers' began around the 1890s, and developed gradually until it took over mainstream pop culture in the 1950s. Even in the 2020s, much of pop culture worldwide revolves around people aged 13-19 (toys, movies, music, etc.). Our goal is to understand the beginnings of this trend, and see how it developed over 50 years. We will use popular films as our primary resource, but include other media (music videos, poems, TV shows) to examine trends and archetypes in more detail.
The secondary goal of this course is for students to see how fashion (e.g. mini skirts in the 1960s, synthetic materials in the 1980s, Y2K fashion in the 2020s) operates in a cycle, with each generation resurrecting what came before, with their own interpretations and changes. After this course, students should be able to identify the general era from which each current fashion trend emerged.
There are four overall themes: identity vs role, social power, third spaces, and archetypes. We will cover 6 decades of pop culture (1950-2000), focusing on major events, music, movies, and fashions from each. Each class will have a lecture covering ten facts. There will be a short, ten question quiz reviewing the facts covered in the previous class.
There will be a midterm examination and final examination, both made up of previous quiz questions. There is a final essay assignment in which students write 1000 words on one of three provided prompts.
Homework will consist of (1) reading excerpts and (2) recommended media viewing. Each time we 'finish' a decade, students will write a short Journal reflecting on the recommended reading & media (for a total of six written reflections).
